ho•bo•pop (noun) : music of uncertain genre, defying mainstream
culture and existing in a state of vagrancy or homelessness.
hobopop productions & hobopop recordings were set up in 2007 by kirsty mcgee and mat martin in response to their various experiences in the music industry. hobopop productions deals with all bookings and management issues for kirsty and the hobopop collective, either directly or via carefully chosen agents in non-english territories. we now also book for a small roster of hand-picked songwriters whose work we truly like and for whom writing is the very core of what they do. you can read about them and listen to samples of their work at www.hobopop.com.
hobopop recordings is kirsty and mat’s record label, started simply to release their own music on terms which treat them and their work fairly. from the small beginnings of 250 handmade copies of the ‘sapho & phao e.p.’ and the limited run of 1000 copies of the ‘hobopop e.p.’, hobopop recordings has grown and has now released kirsty’s fourth studio album ‘the kansas sessions’ with international physical and digital distribution.
the hobopop magpie is a reminder that a successful creature is always resourceful, adaptable, and above all, well turned out in dinner dress!
the ethic that governs hobopop productions is one of respect and genuine enthusiasm for music and people. having been through the process of working with larger companies or concerns we are convinced that the only relationships worth having are based on mutual respect and care for the work at the core of the project. to this end we are careful only to pair up with individuals or companies who genuinely understand where we are coming from and will benefit as much as us from the work we do together. these people are listed on the links and contacts pages of this site.
we are also committed to nurturing an engaged community of quality artists who help each other out and work together to protect each others’ interests. the bottom line is that here at hobopop productions we accept that we as artists have a responsiblity for the success of everything we do and we infuse our work and our working relationships with that positive energy. to this end please take the time to check out the artists we have linked to, and look out for collaborations, especially with the hobopop collective shows.
