HOBOPOP RECORDINGS - HPCD005 - 15.03.10

Singer-songwriter Kirsty McGee recorded her new album No.5 live in one take in front of an invited audience at her native Manchester's Contact Theatre. It’s the first album to feature Kirsty with her full band The Hobopop Collective - and the decision was made to present it with no overdubs or repairs as the best way of capturing their sound.

The one-off show also featured several special guests from the UK music scene, including artists working in bands such as Guillemots (Christopher Cundy - Saxello & Bass Clarinet), The Brute Chorus (James Steel - Electric Guitar), The Guthries (Gabriel Minnikin - Vocals) and with Richard Hawley (Clive Mellor - Harmonica).

Alongside the Collective's new interpretations of songs from McGee's critically acclaimed 4th studio recording The Kansas Sessions (2008), No.5 includes live performances of brand new songs, and a new version of 'Bliss' from her 2002 debut Honeysuckle - the album which earned her the first of two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards nominations (Best Newcomer, Best Original Song).

A free download of Honeysuckle will be available exclusively via her online shop at www.kirstymcgee.com on the same day as No.5 is released.

FROM A NEGATIVE NARRATIVE - MARCH 2010

Maybe tomorrow I’ll want to settle down. Maybe tomorrow I’ll just keep moving on. Actually, maybe tomorrow I’ll just form a Jazz collective, eat out of bins, ride trolley-cars and folk reality off for an altogether happier existence of artisanity, yoghurt and blissed-out tunes. What do you mean someone got there first. Oh - do you mean the rogueish hipsters that I saw hanging out by the bottle bank? Well, not only are they good recyclers, they’re also top people and virtuoso musicians.

The Hobopop Collective are (at the core) Kirsty McGee and Mat Martin, with notable contributions from such revered illuminati as Nick Blacka (Aim), Rob Turner (Magic Hat Ensemble), James Steel (The Brute Chorus), Christopher Cundy (Guillemots) and Clive Mellor (Richard Hawley). They crank like a banged-out mustang ’57 pissing petrol the length of a winding Scottish B-road. Think Corinne Bailey-Rae Arm-Wrestling Sinead O’Connor for a dram of whisky at a disturbed banjo buskathon for burglars, blind folk and beatniks, then drop a few of those variables and cram in some of the bluest blues, the greenest greens, and the wobbliest wobbles. This is more sonic scurvy than calenture, in the best possible way. Download this if you don’t believe us.
